چکیده

16 June 1994 12:32 pm We describe a number of visual illusions of motion in depth in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3D motion of the object. The illusory percepts are phenomenally very strong. We analyze the information which cast shadow motion provides for the inference of 3D object motion and experimentally measure human observers' use of this information. The experimental results show that cast shadow information overrides a number of other strong perceptual constraints, including viewers' assumptions of constant object size and a general viewpoint. Moreover, they support the hypothesis that the human visual system incorporates a stationary light source constraint in the perceptual processing of shadow motion. The system imposes the constraint even when image information suggests a moving light source. Moving Cast Shadows and the Perception of Relative Depth

Perception of motion trajectory of object from the moving cast shadow in infants

A moving cast shadow of the object affects the perception of the object's trajectory in adults [Kersten, D., Mamassian, P., & Knill, D. C. (1997). Moving cast shadow induce apparent motion in depth. Perception, 26, 171-192]. In the present study, we investigated by using a habituation-dishabituation procedure whether infants at 4- to 7-months old discriminate the motion trajectory of a ball fro...

Asymmetry in the perception of motion in depth induced by moving cast shadows.

An expanding object, which may represent an approaching motion, is easier to detect than a contracting one, which may represent a receding object. To confirm the generality of asymmetry in the detection of approaching and receding motions, we focused on the perception of apparent motion in depth created by moving cast shadows. The visual search for an approaching target among receding distracto...

Perception of the motion trajectory of objects from moving cast shadows in infant Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).

The shadows cast by moving objects enable human adults and infants to infer the motion trajectories of objects. Nonhuman animals must also be able to discriminate between objects and their shadows and infer the spatial layout of objects from cast shadows. However, the evolutionary and comparative developmental origins of sensitivity to cast shadows have not been investigated. In this study, we ...

Cast Shadow Illusions

Shadows are everywhere, but they usually go unnoticed. We do, however, use their consequences all the time. Figure 1A shows two pictures each with a green square in front of a checkerboard background. The two pictures differ only in the cast shadows of the square. Because of these differences, the right square appears to be further from the background than the left square. By adding motion to t...

Moving cast shadows induce apparent motion in depth.

Phenomenally strong visual illusions are described in which the motion of an object's cast shadow determines the perceived 3-D trajectory of the object. Simply adjusting the motion of a shadow is sufficient to induce dramatically different apparent trajectories of the object casting the shadow. Psychophysical results obtained with the use of 3-D graphics are reported which show that: (i) the in...
